Sussex County Animal Shelter is a small rural facility in the south east of Virginia. We have 22 dog runs in our shelter and 17 cat runs. This does not include the crates we have set up in several areas of the shelter filled with canines. We have crates set up inside one of our two main cat rooms, 16 cats we have divided by sex, living in two rooms set up especially for them to run and exercise. In 2023 we have brought in 543 animals. 2022 total intake was 777 animals. We are tracking to possibly hit an all-time high by the end of this year. Surpassing 2021’s 802 animals in our custody. Although we have a limited budget, the staff love and care for all animal residents and are willing to do what it takes to save all of them. Fosters, adoptions and rescues are welcome. We have three officers, one full time kennel person and three part-time kennel technicians. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact us or just come see us here at the shelter.

The shelter dogs can always use volunteers to bath, to walk and to communicate with them. For more information see the Sussex County Animal Control website.
