OPERATING CONDITIONS DURING PANDEMIC

As the county re-opens to the public on May 18th, 2020 the Animal Shelter will be operating as follows for adoptions, rescues and surrenders:

Adoptions:

    If you are interested in a dog, e-mail us for an Adoption Application form. Before you can meet a dog, a completed Adoption Application form must be submitted for approval/dis-approval by e-mail to: bcarpenter@sussexcountyva.gov or cstainback@sussexcountyva.gov

  1. Upon approval, an appointment will be arranged for a Meet and Greet with all family members including other pets. During the Meet and Greet, face masks will be worn, and Hand Sanitizer used prior to touching any animal. Once the Meet and Greet is completed, hand sanitizer is required again.

  2. All canines and felines will be spayed/neutered and receive their rabies vaccination prior to leaving the shelter for adoption.

  3. Adoption fee for canines is $100.00 and felines is $60.00

  4. Shelter accepts cash (exact amount) and checks from County residents - cash only from out of County residents.

Rescues/Transportation/Fosters:

The animal and paperwork will be brought outside to you.

County residents surrendering pets or strays into shelter in person:

If possible please call 434-246-2167 prior to bringing pets or strays to shelter so that staff know to expect you.



Visiting Sussex County Animal Shelter
Please phone us on 434-246-2167 to check that the dog you want to visit is still available. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the shelter is only open by appointment between 9am and 3pm Monday-Friday. You will need to call the shelter and speak to someone in order to make an appointment.
